My Father Married Your Mother -Â Candid essays compiled on stepfamilies
The 26 essays in “My Father Married Your Mother” tackle the subject of stepfamilies from all directions… One thing that all the essays have in common is that they are brutally honest.
“I wanted them to only be honest because I thought the collection would only work if these were honest stories. To me the problem was that there was such deception about the experience of being in a stepfamily. People didn’t really want to talk about some of the deep feelings they have because they were not socially acceptable,” Burt says.
… Another common thread in the book is the theme of loss. “Every stepfamily is borne on the back of a loss. A child has lost a parent. Whether it’s through divorce or death or abandonment, there is a major loss that needs to be acknowledged,” Burt says.

I wanted it to be honest because I wanted people to see that it is very difficult to live in a stepfamily. One might have an issue eating him or her but because he/she has no one to talk to this end up forcing him/her take the wrong road. Many of the teenagers who commit suicuide are usually from the stepfamilies. They take this difficult/ruthless and hard road because they see this as their only way to piece of mind or freedom and a happy life.
Usually if we were to talk to these teenagers they are not at liberty to talk of their background to anyone because they fear of the unkown, thus their main fear is that this will end up in the ears of their families and thus creating more problems than ever.
The other thing is thatI see from personal experiences is that they sometimes run away from home because there is lack of love and they are not appriciated.
