I apologize for the long hiatus. After a somewhat eventful pregnancy and adjusting to life with a newborn baby, I’m finally getting back to a routine and hope to start posting again at least once a week.
I’m currently reading The Truth About Children and Divorce by Robert E. Emery, Ph.D. This is an excellent book! If you are in the midst of any stage of divorce and have children I highly recommend adding this book to your reading list.

Hi Mindy,
Just wondering how this book compares to others you’ve read about children of divorce. I’ve only read Judith Wallerstein’s material. Does Emery discuss her work and her conclusions at all?

I would say this book is a sort of in-depth “how to” for dealing with divorce and children. Judith Wallerstein writes a lot about the effects of divorce. In this book, Emery gives some very practical advice for how to minimize those negative effects. I haven’t read mention of Wallerstein’s work but I am only half way through the book.
What I’m really enjoying about the book is that not only is it practical but it is realistic. Emery puts a lot of emphasis on the importance of keeping your emotions in control, which is easier said than done. He offers advice on how to do that but isn’t afraid to be honest about how difficult it can be. I have read some books about children and divorce that seem to sugarcoat the whole situation and that doesn’t do anyone any favors. It’s refreshing to hear from someone who is upfront about how messy and painful it will be but at the same time offers hope.
